Open with a slightly off key voice singing "Soak up the Sun"...
When I have had a long, frustrating day, week, etc. and feel like screaming, a good song on the radio is just what the doctor ordered. I sing along at the top of my lungs. Now, don't get me wrong, I am no American Idol wanna be. I have heard my voice as others do, with the help of a tape recorder, I have no delusions about how I sound. However, what I lack in talent, I make up for in enthusiasm!
My favorite songs are mostly 80's and 90's music (there's a surprise, right?), some current stuff, and there are some country songs that can really brighten my mood like "As Good As I Once Was" by Toby Keith. Even though I am happily married, I love to belt out Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats." Pretty much any song that you can picture singing over a piano in a bar after a few too many, will do.
Sad to say, I have indoctrinated my daughters. They are now radio junkies as well, not to mention their addiction to the music of my youth. Fortunately, through the magic of technology, they can watch "the Incredibles" or some other fine Disney fare on the DVD player and listen on headphones and I can sing without fear of further damage to their impressionable minds.
It's cheaper than a therapist and doesn't require an appointment. Anytime I am in the car, I can have a session. So, someday when you see me in my SUV, wearing my designer (prescription) sunglasses and looking like I am carrying on an animated conversation with some unknown passenger, you'll know I'm working toward better mental health.
